Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and let it heat up. Use butter or spray to grease a 9-inch pan and lightly dust it with flour.

Combine nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and flour in a bowl. Use a whisk or fork to mix.

In another bowl, cream the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar together until it’s fluffy. Beat in the eggs one by one, then add applesauce and vanilla.

Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Stir gently until blended, and if you want, fold in the nuts or raisins.

Pour the batter into the pan. Bake for about 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted in the middle. Let it sit in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a rack to cool fully.

Top it off with cream cheese frosting, a drizzle of caramel, or some vanilla glaze if you'd like.
