Preheat oven to 220°C. Whisk together eggs and milk in a mixing bowl, incorporating salt and black pepper.

Arrange bread slices in a shallow dish. Pour the egg mixture over them and press each slice to ensure both sides absorb the liquid evenly. Allow to soak for 5 minutes.

Transfer soaked bread slices to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Place in the oven and bake for 7 minutes.

Remove baking sheet from the oven and carefully flip bread slices. Spread each slice with crushed tomatoes or pizza sauce and sprinkle with oregano. Distribute sliced red onion over the top and add pieces of mozzarella. Optionally season with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Return the tray to the oven, set to broil at 220°C, and bake for 7–10 minutes until the mozzarella is bubbling and lightly golden.

Let the toasts cool briefly. Garnish with chopped fresh basil and serve warm.
